Description
Collaborative interventions in rehabilitation are practices that create equal family-professional partnerships and rely on family expertise to develop and evaluate intervention strategies. (1) They are characterized by truly family-directed approaches in which the service provider is viewed as a consultant or guide. These interventions contrast with more traditional client-practitioner relationships, where the clinician is viewed as an expert with decision-making power. To be collaborative, the provider must employ excellent interpersonal skills, be willing to release a traditional patient-provider role, and help families determine the most relevant treatment goals based on family and client context. Although not simple to implement, speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) increased collaboration with families impacted by chronic cognitive-linguistic impairments has significant potential to improve service delivery by increasing treatment efficiency and sustainability of treatment outcomes.
